Excitement and the thrill of victory has taken over the St. Vincent community as the women’s basketball team beat San Domenico last night to advance to the Div. 5 championships of the North Coast Section. The Mustangs won 33-30 but were trailing most of the game until an offensive flurry midway in the 3rd quarter. Down 18-10 in that 3rd quarter, the team stepped up their pressing defense and wore down the Panthers who only had 6 available members on their team. Grace Jennings started the barrage of points with a “3” followed by a couple of baskets/free throws by Ellie O’Neill and Maddie Perry. By the end of that quarter, the Mustangs pulled ahead 23-20. With less than 30 seconds to go in the fourth quarter, and the Mustangs up by 3, San Domenico had the opportunity to score, but the Mustangs played a smothering defense protecting the 3 point line. The only play for the Panthers was to shoot a 2-pointer on a driving lay-up and it was missed with no foul on the play. Leading the scoring for the Mustangs were Ellie O’Neill with 8 points (8 rebounds) and Maddie Perry with 7. It should be noted that Rainey Henry’s 4 points in the 2nd quarter (the only points scored in that quarter) kept the Mustangs “in the game” before halftime.
St. Vincent HS remains the only team in the Redwood Empire that will be going for a championship. The game will be played against the #4 seed International who upset the #1 seed Valley Christian. The Mustangs lost to International in a tournament played in January, so redemption and momentum will be on the side of St. Vincent. Game time will be 5:00 and played at Albany High School.
