The St. Vincent Varsity basketball teams survived a scare when they traveled to Upper Lake. The Varsity men squeaked by 69-66 and the Varsity women 62-50. Both teams trailed at halftime, but were able to have a solid 2nd half to pull out a victory.
The Varsity men’s squad trailed going into the third quarter 50-43, but were able to put 26 on the scoreboard compared to Upper Lake’s 16 in the final quarter. Leading the scoring for the Mustangs were Chris Faulknor with 20 points, Max Cowell 16, Grant DeVoe 14, and Liam Galten with 9. The victory capped off a 10-4 league record which leaves the Mustangs in 3rd place in the NCLII. Overall, they have compiled a 12-13 record with the league tournament remaining on their schedule. A good showing in the tournament could vault the Mustangs over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Varsity women’s squad trailed at halftime 24-21 to Upper Lake, but the Lady Mustangs were able to pull ahead for good in the third quarter outscoring the Cougars 24-8 to go up 45-32. Upper Lake pulled within 8 in the fourth quarter, but just did not have enough to finish. The Lady Mustangs will play their last game on the schedule today vs. Piedmont. They currently are undefeated league champions at 14-0 and 20-5 overall. The league tournament will begin on Tuesday and finish on Friday in preparation for the NCS playoffs.
Both JV squads finished their seasons with a win over Upper Lake. The JV girls score was 30-23 and secured at least a tie for the league championship. The JV boys finished with a strong game in winning 61-29.
