The Lady Mustangs played Roseland Prep last night and came away with a 45-43 win to solidfy their lead in the NCL II league. Playing without injured starters Grace Jennings (ankle) and Ursyla Baumgarten (knee), the Mustangs needed the win to stay ahead of Roseland Prep in league play. It was an intense battle all night against the scrappy Knights with the Mustangs pulling ahead by 10 points with 5 minutes remaining in the game. Then with numerous turnovers by the Mustangs and timely shooting by the Knights, they pulled ahead by 1 point with approximately 1 minute to play. Senior Rainey Henry hit a basket that put the Mustangs ahead for good, but the Knights had an attempted 3 pointer that fell short . It took a free throw made by senior Rebecca Dodele in the final seconds to secure the two point win. The team retains its undefeated first place standing in league, with Roseland Prep and Sonoma Academy trailing by 2 games. Overall record for the St. Vincent women is currently 13-5.
The Varsity men had a sluggish start in their game vs. 1st place opponent Roseland Prep trailing 17-8 at the end of the first quarter. They came back in the 2nd quarter to trail by the score of 22-18, but just could not pull ahead of the Knights for the rest of the game losing 45-40. Leading the scoring for the Mustangs were Junior Grant DeVoe with 12 points and Senior Max Cowell with 11. The men are currently 5-4 in league and remain in 4th place in the NCL II.
Both JV teams lost to Roseland Prep, with the girls results 40-31 and boys 52-49. All four teams travel to Sonoma Academy tonight for another league contest.
