The Lady Mustangs beat Ripon Christian last night, 46-33, in the first round of the Div. 5 Northern California Championships. After a slow start, St. Vincent was able to pull ahead at the end of the first quarter 12-9. Using their usual full court pressure, the Lady Mustangs were able to force Ripon Christian into numerous turnovers and finish the half ahead 21-19. The third quarter found Ripon fatigued from the Mustang pressure as they could only muster 4 points in the quarter to St. Vincent’s 13. Soph Olivia DeGraca provided some aggressive play on the boards for the Mustangs and grabbed numerous rebounds. Comfortably ahead at the start of the 4th quarter 34-23, the Mustangs started throwing the ball away and Ripon Christian pulled to within 8. Seniors Ellie O’Neill and Rebecca Dodele were able to hit 2 3-pointers and “ice” the game away. Scoring for the Mustangs were as follows: Ellie O’Neill 9 points; Ursyla Baumgarten 8; Jacalyn Murphy 8; Rebecca Dodele 8; Olivia DeGraca 7; and Grace Jennings with 6. This team continues to play “like a team” with balanced scoring and play from every member of the squad. Next game for St. Vincent will be Saturday against #4 seed Eastside Prep of Palo Alto. This will be a tough test for the Lady Mustangs, but they never back away from a challenge.
