Community Service Deadlines

St. Vincent de Paul High School has a NEW Christian Community Service program. The NEW program called THE LEGACY PROGRAM will approach Christian Community Service thematically, placing assignments into the curriculum of the Theology/English Departments. Students will keep a Community Service Portfolio throughout their four years at SVHS. This portfolio will exemplify students’ progression and personal growth in the area of Christian Community Service. Assignments will be given with the intention of broadening the students’ awareness of service opportunities within their school, parish, clubs, sports, community locally and beyond providing ways to involve oneself with hands-on direct service experiences.

The mission is to have the students

EXPLORE, EXPAND, EMBRACE & ENGAGE

in their Christian Community Service leaving SVHS with a Personal Legacy of Service upon their graduation.

The current goal of the Legacy Program is for ALL graduating seniors to organize and create a Powerpoint Portfolio Presentation of their four years of community service. The connection being made is that all students when doing community service leave behind something of themselves, their legacy. The Legacy Program celebrates community service and the personal LEGACIES of each SVHS student. Senior Portfolio Presentations will take place during one Activity Period at the end of the school year. These presentations are a graduation requirement.

The following details each year’s requirements and goals:

·         Freshman Year – EXPLORE
Freshman will be asked EXPLORE community service right at home and in their local community. Students will look at the importance of supporting not only their family but the SV School, their church, and the local community around them. The number of in-class Christian Community Service hours will vary depending on the assignment. Four service assignments will be given in Theology class and two essays written in English class. As a freshman, a total of 20 outside of class Christian Community Service hours are required by each student.

·         Sophomore Year – EXPAND
Sophomores will be asked to EXPAND their service to the wider community through “school approved” non-profit agencies. This next step will provide additional opportunities for students to connect and learn about ways of solving social issues inherent in our society. It will be a way of examining various non-profit agencies in the hopes of finding one that inspires and motivates each individual. Four assignments will be given in Theology class and two essays written in English class.
As a sophomore, a total of 30 outside of class Christian Community Service hours are required by each student.

·         Junior Year – EMBRACE
Juniors will be asked to EMBRACE a “school approved” non-profit agency and provide consistent service to that organization. An in-depth analysis and a possible solution to the challenges of the chosen organization are required. The junior Theology teacher will monitor and collect all written work related to service during students’ junior year. As a junior, a total of 30 outside of class Christian Community Service hours are required by each student.

·         Senior Year – ENGAGE
Seniors will be asked to further ENGAGE in a “school approved” non-profit agency during their last year at SVHS totaling 30 hours of Christian Community Service. Using their portfolios, seniors will also be asked to create a Powerpoint Presentation which demonstrates the commitment of the student to Christian Community Service over the course of four years. The presentations will be monitored by the senior Theology teacher and the Christian Community Service Coordinator. In-class with the Theology teacher or at lunch/after school with the Christian Community Service Coordinator, students will be taught the necessary skills to succeed at this vital service portfolio review. Christian Community Service Portfolio Presentations will exemplify the progression of the student over the period of four years in addition to tie their service directly to the Social and Spiritual Graduation Outcomes of our school. The Legacy Program is designed to illustrate that with each action of service students (without even knowing) leave behind their individual “Legacy” that will be forever remembered and passed on to future classes in the SV community.
