Anamarie Hogue, Spanish EXT 184 Email |
Dr. Walker and I have something in common. We are both graduates of the University of Redlands, where I received a major in Spanish, with a minor in French. After finishing up at Redlands, I knew that I wanted to teach languages, so I pursued a teaching credential at Cal State Los Angeles. My love and passion for languages and other cultures began when I was 12 years old. My father packed up the family and moved us down to Mexico City for the summer so he could work as a stock broker investing pesos instead of dollars. It was from that point on that I loved everything and anything Hispanic. After my graduation from high school, I traveled down to the Amazon jungle, swam with piranhas and boa constrictors, and explored Colombia and Brazil. During my senior year in college I returned to Mexico, only this time to Guadalajara, where I took an intensive course in Spanish, and had too much fun with four of my roommates. Then came the beginning of many trips to Europe, with my first being a homestay in Asturias, Spain. It was a fabulously successful trip for me, but less so for my Spanish "mother" whose plan was for an American girl to fall in love with her grown son. It obviously didn't work since my last name is Hogue. Not pleased with my speaking ability in French after college graduation, I accepted a position with a French youth organization, lived a year in France, and studied at l'Institut Catholique de Lyons, the gastronomie capital of the world. It was during that year that I realized that I was smitten with French food, wine, history, art, and long lunches. I had become a full-fledged francophile.
I will be eternally grateful to the Christian Brothers for providing me with my first teaching position at La Salle High School in Sierra Madre. I loved teaching all boys, but I also fell in love with a fellow colleague, whose nickname at the school was "the English scholar". My husband and I both share a passion for teaching, cooking, traveling, and reading. But our most valued treasures are our two grown daughters, who themselves have a curiosity and desire to explore the world. |
