Dear St. Vincent’s Community,

It has been a great pleasure welcoming our returning students and meeting the new members of our community. The first few weeks of the year have been energetic and studious, and we hope that all our students are having a focused and productive start to the school year.

We renewed our relationships with students and parents during the assemblies and potlucks of orientation week in August, and this helped bring everybody together as a community and to collectively define our common goals in serving the school mission. The week concluded with our grand procession to the church to celebrate our opening Mass. Since then we have had a freshmen retreat and freshmen dance, and our volleyball, football, soccer, and cross-country teams are all busy competing at the top of their games.

Construction is nearly finished on the St. Vincent’s fieldhouse going up on the east boundary of Yarbrough Field: a snack bar, admissions gate, and athletic broadcasting facility with ADA accessible public restrooms, equipment storage, and a conference room. This project was fully funded by a grant from the Irwin Foundation, the same group that funded the renovation of the chemistry laboratory.

This year we open our college center in the office adjacent to the library, staffed by college counselor Martie Lee. The college center provides excellent resources for all our students as they navigate their paths to their future universities and institutions of higher learning. We encourage all students to visit the college center and learn more about how to reach their goals.

The student newspaper the Onlooker, under the management of Laila McClay and Gio Benedetti, will be adding an on-line component this year that will make the school news instantly accessible to alumni, parent, local and global communities. We look forward to the official on-line launch on Thursday, September 12th.

We also welcome our new staff members: Daniel Fahy is teaching Spanish and ESL, Megan Parreira is teaching Spanish at the high school and elementary school, and Tom Woodhead, teaching in speech and debate, will be leading the debaters with Laila McClay to their first big competition of the year this weekend at Wake Forest.

Our technology initiative that helped create the renovated computer lab last year will be further advanced by our new IT Director Chris Clark. Thanks to the successful fundraising efforts of the volunteers who stage the St. Vincent’s Fashion Show, we’re in the process of installing BenQ HD digital projection systems in the classrooms.

We have a new look to the front office where Jessica Merrill is operating as our receptionist across from Joanne Ferris in the advancement office. Claudia Thompson takes our special education program into its second year, and has expanded the Edge classes to two sections. Our international program is growing, and we are welcoming increased participation in the performing arts. Marie Rodnick is energizing campus ministry, and with the collaboration of Sadie Dolcini is expanding leadership into two sections. Mathematics has added a support section for algebra II, and conceptual physics is integrating experiments in applied science.

We invite all our parents to come see what’s new at school and meet the teachers of their sons and daughters at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 11th.

I hope that you all enjoyed a delightful summer vacation and Labor Day Holiday, and I welcome you back with excitement for the new school year.
