DeCarli Gymnasium was electric last night as the seniors celebrated their final league game on their home court vs. Calistoga. Both Varsity games reflected this special occasion as the women won 50-19 and the men 55-28.
The women were never contested as they pulled away from Calistoga 15-0 in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way. The team is comprised of 9 very special senior women — Ursyla Baumgarten, Joy Cho, Rebecca Dodele, Kenzie Fairow, Rainey Henry, Grace Jennings, Jacalyn Murphy, Ellie O’Neill, and Maddie Perry. Jennings and Dodele led the scoring on the evening with 16 and 11 points respectively. League record for the Mustangs is now an impressive 13-0 and 19-5 overall with two games remaining.
The Varsity men had their usual first quarter doldrums trailing Calistoga at the end of the quarter 5-3. But then they outscored the Wildcats 21-6 and led at halftime 24-11. The third quarter brought a similar outcome in outscoring the Wildcats 18-6 and the lead stretching to 42-17. The 9 seniors celebrating on the night were – Max Cowell, Brandon Evans, Chris Faulknor, Christian Gergus, Patrick Garcia, Derek Murphy, Alex Neve, Zach Pierson, and Joe Purtell. Supplying the scoring punch were Soph. Liam Galten with 20 points, Zach Pierson with 10, and Max Cowell with 8 in addition to 9 assists. This was the fifth win in a row for the Mustangs and they have taken over 3rd place in league at 9-4. The team is currently 11-13 overall, but have been showing remarkable improvement during their win streak.
The JV girls and boys also won on the night. All four teams will travel to Upper Lake on Friday to finish league play. Both Varsity teams will be involved in league playoffs next week and then will await seeding in the NCS playoffs.
