Congratulations to the St. Vincent Debate team for a great tournament a the Wake Forest Invitational this past weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Four Varsity teams from SV (Ricky Young & Adam Martin, Brittany Gamlen & Anna Griffin, Julia Anderson & Rebecca Grant, and Sky Doble & Kylie Clark) competed against more than 100 teams from across the country. Special recognition goes to Ricky Young & Adam Martin who won 5 out of 6 of their preliminary debates and made it all the way to the Quarterfinal round, earning their first bid to this year’s Tournament of Champions. The Tournament of Champions is held in May each year at the University of Kentucky. The TOC is the functional equivalent of the NCAA March Madness tournament, in which teams must earn at least 2 bids at specifically sanctioned national circuit tournaments in order to be invited to compete as one of the country’s top 68 debate teams. St. Vincent has competed at the TOC each of the last 2 years and things are looking good to make it 3 years in a row! SVHS Debate Coach, Laila McClay said, “the Wake Forest tournament was extra tough this year, making Ricky & Adam’s placement in the top 8 teams in the country especially exciting.”
Next up for SV Debate, 3 Varsity teams will compete at the prestigious Greenhill Invitational Debate Tournament in Dallas September 20-23. The following weekend, 9 Varsity and 2 JV teams will compete at the CSU Long Beach Invitational Debate Tournament.
